DeSoto Caverns Brings Learning to Life

We’re so excited to share with you our latest project! This project is a combination of our dedication to education and learning and our passion for our caverns. The caverns formations and unique ecological system contribute to making DeSoto Caverns a must-see for an immersive scientific study. The Caverns themselves are a historic landmark and have hosted a rich history that featured early Native American habitations, Civil War hideouts, and prohibition parties. There’s so much to learn during a visit to our caverns, which is why we are a popular destination for both social studies and science field trips.

Our goal for this latest project is to create an intentional learning experience by piquing students interests before they even arrive on the grounds. We plan to do this by providing public, private, and homeschool teachers with grade-specific materials to incorporate the educational aspects of our caverns into their curriculum. This material includes videos, downloadable handouts, quizzes, and more that correspond to classroom learning. We have used Alabama’s course of study standards in order to develop appropriate grade-level curriculum that matches the standards that are covered in different grades.

We’ve put a lot of time in energy into this project because we’re dedicated to creating an innovative educational environment. Walt Disney once said, “I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something than educate people and hope they were entertained.” We want to create an exciting place where students are having so much fun, they don’t realize they’re actually learning. We’re so excited to partner with teachers and schools to bring this type of “edu-tainment” to the classroom.
